Everbright International Sets Up Research Institute with Shandong Academy of Sciences

To Enhance Research & Development Standard for Localizing Core Environmental Protection Technologies

China Everbright International Limited ("Everbright International" or "the Group") announced today that it has set up the "Everbright International-Shandong Academy of Sciences Environmental Protection and Energy Saving Construction Technology Research Institute" ("Research Institute") in Beijing with the Shandong Academy of Sciences. The establishment of the Research Institute marked the beginning of cooperation between the environmental protection industry and research institutions in China in contribution to equipping the environmental protection industry with the ability to localize and develop proprietary core industry technologies.

The Research Institute will pool together the experience of Everbright International in environmental construction and the research and development strengths of the Shandong Academy of Sciences to aid the enhancement of the research and development standards of environmental protection and energy saving technologies and ultimately benefit the entire industry. Focusing on critical common problems faced by players in the industry, the Research Institute will work on research and development of building systems of and ancillary facilities for and engineering of environmental protection and energy saving related equipments, forming a platform for supporting development of industry technologies and turning those technologies into applications, and for provision of services. It will also promote innovation and a top-notch industry workforce, thus driving growth of the environmental protection and energy saving equipment industry, with the ultimate aim of making contribution to the economic and social advancement in the PRC.

After Everbright International decided in 2003 to focus its efforts on environmental protection business, it has been investing mainly in projects in the Yangtze River Delta, the Pearl River Delta and the Bohai Bay Rim Economic Zone. Currently, it has 24 energy and water treatment projects in operation, commanding a total investment of approximately HK$6.8 billion. As at the end of 2008, these projects together had an annual processing capacity for household waste of 1.5 million tonnes, generating 400 million kwh of on-grid electricity. The daily processing capacity for waste water was 1.5 million tonnes, and the total annual processing capacity for other industrial waste was 20,000 tonnes. In addition to actively looking for and operating environmental protection projects, Everbright International also places strong emphasis on research and development. It has been active in working with various research institutions and has set up its own technical team and research and development team in Shenzhen and Beijing respectively. It has under its umbrella a number of leading environmental protection enterprises and a research and development team that are of high quality, possess advanced technological know how and are very efficient, to brace the "Everbright Environment" brand.
